Embracing Neurodiversity at Apex Hotels

Blog
#staff #health & Wellbeing #be yourself here
As we celebrate National Neurodiversity Week, it’s an ideal time to reflect on the importance of embracing diversity in all its forms. At Apex Hotels, we encourage everyone to be themselves. We understand that every individual is unique, and this extends to the diverse ways in which our brains process and interact with the world. Bringing new perspectives and skills to the team. Neurodiversity encompasses conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other cognitive variations, all of which are an integral part of the human experience.

What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is the idea that neurological differences should be recognized and respected. People who are neurodivergent think, learn, and experience the world in ways that are different from what is typically expected. Instead of seeing these differences as faults, the neurodiversity movement encourages us to appreciate them as valuable aspects of human diversity.

Approximately 20% of the population is diagnosed neurodiverse, with many more undiagnosed or awaiting diagnosis. With such a high figures, adapting our ways of working was necessary.

Be Yourself Here

As a company, we pride ourselves on providing exceptional service and creating environments where everyone feels welcome, valued, and understood. This means that neurodiversity isn’t just a buzzword at Apex Hotels—it’s a key component of our commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. We recognize that our guests and employees come from all walks of life, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their neurodivergence, can enjoy their stay or thrive in their work environment.

“From outside of the box to outside of the normal brain… Ideas, patterns, thoughts, and opportunities mesh together in a different way in those with ASD.  Everyone is unique and can create amazing, creative ideas, but the way in which a neurodivergent person can interpret things vastly differs and having this as part of your team can help with creativity, innovation and give you an edge on your competitors.

Marry this with the pattern recognition, and the attention to detail, where they are noticing every single little thing, and you have a powerful ability to seek alternative solutions to challenges and problems that others perhaps don’t.  You have that and some exceptional neurotypical people in your team, and you are on to an absolute winner.”

Paul, General Manager

We’re committed to making our hotels, restaurants, and offices more accessible and comfortable for all individuals, including those who are neurodivergent.

We provide regular training for our staff through our Thrive platform to raise awareness about neurodiversity. Thrive recently shared a podcast interview by Content Cast, discussing neurodiversity in the workplace. Ritu Kiran-Jackson, founder of 'Aubilities' echoed one of our core beliefs that every individual is an individual, neurotypical or neurodivergent. Every team member will have their own profile to thrive.

Understanding the needs of team members and guests with sensory sensitivities or those who may require additional support is so important. By equipping our team with this knowledge, we can provide more personalized care and ensure that everyone feels supported.

"Great leadership is underpinned by understanding each team member individually. Diagnosed, undiagnosed, neurodivergent or neurotypical, everyone deserves to feel included and welcome in the workplace."

Sophie, Group Marketing Manager

“It is so refreshing to be working somewhere so open to diversity. Apex Hotels funnels so much education and training into its team that everyone should be up to date and informed.

As a fellow Neurospicy Club member, with a range of chronic conditions to accessorise with, I appreciate how tailored my work life is to suit me and my individual needs. I can work from home, Teams chats over long meetings, and in those in-person meetings I can utilise my own techniques in order to stay sharp. It can be extremely difficult to corporate cosplay for a neurodiverse person. Apex truly does encourage you to be yourself, and values your ideas in whatever presentation they come in.

My team are incredibly supportive and accepting, and it’s the people like them that make Apex Hotels great.”

Bex, Social Media & Content Expert

Celebrating Neurodiversity Week

During National Neurodiversity Week, we’re especially proud to celebrate the strengths and talents of our neurodiverse community. We encourage our guests and staff to take part in learning more about neurodiversity, whether through reading, engaging with resources, or simply having a conversation about the importance of inclusion.

As we continue to strive towards being a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all, we are excited about the steps we’ve taken so far and the path ahead. Embracing neurodiversity isn’t just about creating spaces for people to stay or work—it’s about recognizing that everyone has a unique perspective to offer, and that diversity makes us stronger.

At Apex Hotels, we are proud to celebrate National Neurodiversity Week and look forward to continually building a more inclusive, diverse world for everyone, one step at a time.
